Beyond The Strike: A Comedy of Errors & The Box-Office Flop of Gender Boxes
Ah, Iceland, the land of eternal ice and fiery social movements! Last week, we hit the streets in droves, a 100,000-strong force of women and non-binary (in a nation of 390,000 total population, including 150 registered non-binary in Iceland) against sexual violence and the gender pay gap.
Noble, right? Well, as one said, “It was like a Magnificent Motivational Weekend Retreat with Tony Robbins.”
But get this, we managed to trip over our own shoelaces and box ourselves in.
Again.
The Epic Sequel No One Asked For
In 1975, Icelandic women did something extraordinarily different, dropping their domestic duties for societal change. Flash-forward to 2023, we still have our pots and pans, but we also have CEOs, business owners, bishops and ministers who joined the rally.
Hooray for progress? Nah…not so fast! The women who made it and attended the event were met with side-eyes and a "What are YOU doing here?" vibe from other women who claim to be in the 'Leaders in the Union' box.
Yep, we've diversified the boxes, but now we're arguing about the most 'authentic' resident of ‘Boxville-Town’.
"FOKK Feðraveldið" or "FOKK Logic?"
As women and a portion of the 150 registered non-binary people in Iceland chanted "FOKK Feðraveldið," shaking their fists at the 'patriarchal system,' let's zoom into the other side of the table. There sat men—some equality pioneers, some passionate leaders, feeling like they've been doing their bits creating the society that mirrors gender equality today in Iceland, mind you—they were scratching their heads. They want the pay gap gone and despise sexual violence, but they weren't on the VIP list for the 'unity' party — they didn’t belong to the ‘women and non-binary box’.
No. These men were branded as the villains in a plot they didn't write.
Hilarious? No.
Ironic? Absolutely.
And Now, our Lives According to Boxes: Distraction!
The viral social media aftershock had men defending their honour, women safeguarding the strike, and guess what got pushed backstage?
The issue of sexual violence. It vanished faster than my interest in kale smoothies. We've become fierce gatekeepers of our boxes, letting the essential points escape through the cracks.
Time to Quantum-Leap Our Thinking
Helluuu folks! Wake-up! We've got quantum computers; why not quantum minds? Boxes are so last century. Let's realise we can be complex beings with layered opinions. You can be a successful woman and still fight for equality. You can be a man against sexual violence and advocating for closing the gender pay gap, and you should be able to raise your voice to join the cause. No more this-or-that nonsense; let's become quantum humans who defy the logic of boxes.

What's the takeaway from this latest social drama? What if we stopped the box-office releases and opted for an indie film called "Togetherness." This event should be a cornerstone, not just another stone in the wall of division.
