Embracing Growth and Laughter: Navigating 2023 with the No More Boxes Approach
Reflecting on 2023: Embracing Self-Growth and Laughter
2023, what a rollercoaster! A mix of "What was that?" and "Eureka!" moments. As we prepare for the new year, I say, “It's time to reflect, laugh a little, and find the silver lining in even the less stellar times”.
You’ve most likely heard me talk about our boxes! I know, it looks like I’m stuck in a never-ending cycle, talking about our human tendency to box ourselves in. As someone who loves to see people thrive and uplift themselves and others, it’s heartbreaking to see too many of us stuck in the "I'm Not Good Enough" or "I'm Not Perfect Enough" boxes. By far one of the most limiting place to be in, I’m personally familiar with these boxes. I’ve become slightly more aware of being stuck in there and what I can do to escape the situation.
My trick to escape these boxes is to use the 4-Step No More Boxes process, which helps break free from these destructive thoughts.
Step 1: Self-Awareness – Connecting the Dots
2023 was a year of unexpected lessons, like learning the hidden virtues of Brussels sprouts. What I learned, though, was that each challenge was a hidden opportunity to strengthen a new muscle. Giving yourself time to see the gift in even the most challenging moments is a transformative process. Try it for yourself. Reflect on your own challenges and triumphs of 2023 – what did they teach you?
Step 2: Self-Regulation – Crafting 'Me 2.0'
With the wisdom gained, it's time to sculpt a new, resilient self. Ask, "Who do I want to become?" For me, a significant step was actively listening to those around me and becoming fully present in conversations. These moments of connection are priceless. I’m going to continue training my listening skills in 2024.
Step 3: Self-Love – Cherishing Quiet Moments
I used to mistake self-love for selfishness, but in 2023, I changed that. I learned self-love is often about the small things, like a cup of chamomile tea or preparing for restful sleep with a sprinkle of lavender mist on your pillow. These acts of self-care are crucial for rejuvenation.
Step 4: Humour – Embracing the Absurd
Laughter, especially at oneself, is vital. As a spirited woman in her 60s, I've often found myself unwittingly adhering to societal norms, only to later chuckle at the silliness of it all. It's about realising that our thoughts aren't always truths, bringing us back to self-awareness.
Writing 'Beyond Gender: The New Rules of Leadership this year reinforced the transformative power of writing. It's not just cathartic; it's a way to clarify thoughts and live our best lives.
So, as we say goodbye to 2023, let's move forward with humour, sass, and the belief that every experience is a step towards a better self.
Here's to a year of growth, laughter, and living without confining boxes!
Cheers to a fantastic new year! 🥂🌟
