How to Use Robin Sharma’s Questions to Align with Your Energy Profile

Why Good Advice Works Differently for Everyone: Unlocking Your Leadership Energy

Have you ever read a piece of advice that felt like a lightning bolt of clarity? Like the words were written just for you, shifting your perspective and sparking immediate action? And yet, sometimes, even the best advice can slide right off, leaving no lasting mark.

This made me ponder: Why does some advice stick while other pearls of wisdom vanish like morning dew?

This very question crossed my mind as I stumbled upon Robin Sharma’s four transformative daily questions he shared in his recent newsletter. The four questions Robin uses daily are:

  1. Where did I grow today?

  2. Who did I help today?

  3. What did I do well today?

  4. How can I make tomorrow better?

At first glance, these seem universally powerful, don’t they?

But as I reflected on them, I wondered: Are all good pieces of advice truly “good” for everyone? Or does their impact depend on who we are, how we think, and where our energy flows?

The Secret Sauce: Understanding Leadership Through Energy

In my years as a leadership coach and mentor, I’ve realised that how advice resonates is deeply tied to our unique energy blueprint.

According to ancient Eastern wisdom, each of us has a distinct combination of the five energies – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water – that shape our focus, values, and life approach. (You can discover yours by taking The Vitality Test, created by my business partner Nicholas Haines, CEO of Five Institute UK.

Trust me, it’s a game-changer.)

These energies determine how we lead, see and experience the world, where our X-factor hides and how we absorb and act on advice. I’m fascinated by the Five Energies beyond measure and have used them for my clients, entrepreneurs, leaders, musicians, and politicians to help them see the unique strengths, blindspots and boxes they fall into in their day-to-day lives.

Let’s dive into Robin Sharma’s four questions through the lens of the energies and see how they might speak to different leaders.

1. Where did I grow today?

  • Wood energy (Visionary trailblazers):
Growth is their lifeblood. A Wood leader thrives on progress, so this question fires up their natural drive to push boundaries and create change.

  • Fire energy (Charismatic igniters):
Fires love to celebrate their passion and enthusiasm. This question sparks their joy in sharing stories of their growth with others.

  • Earth energy (Empathetic nurturers):
Growth for an Earth-type might revolve around how they deepened connections or brought stability to their community.

  • Metal energy (Precise perfectionists):
Metals focus on refining their processes, framing this question around perfecting a skill or crafting something to its highest standard.

  • Water energy (Deep thinkers):
For Water leaders, growth lies in reflection and strategic insight. This question encourages them to dig deeper into their purpose.

2. Who did I help today?

  • Earth energy:
This question feels like coming home. Earth leaders thrive on supporting others, and this question aligns perfectly with their core values.

  • Fire energy:
Fires are natural connectors. Helping others is a source of joy and fuels their leadership charisma.

  • Wood energy:
Woods enjoys seeing their efforts drive impactful change, so this question inspires them to think of the bigger picture of their influence.

  • Water energy:
Waters helps by offering wisdom and foresight. This question invites them to reflect on their deeper, long-term impact.

  • Metal energy:
Metals excel at creating systems that help others succeed. They’d interpret this question through the lens of improving processes to serve their teams better.

3. What did I do well today?

  • Fire energy: Fires love this question because it celebrates their natural shine and energy. It’s a moment for them to bask in their achievements (and maybe share them, too!).

  • Metal energy: Precision-focused Metals love to review their wins. They’ll analyze what worked and how they can replicate or improve on it.

  • Earth energy: Earths see their value in the relationships they nurture. This question prompts them to appreciate the harmony they fostered today.

  • Wood energy: Woods will answer this with action-oriented pride, focusing on their steps to move forward.

  • Water energy: Waters reflect on the meaning behind their day’s actions. Did they align with their long-term purpose? If so, they’ll feel content.

4. How can I make tomorrow better?

  • Water energy: As a natural strategist, Waters loves this forward-looking question. It aligns with their drive to plan for the future.

  • Wood energy: Woods seized this question as a chance to refine their vision and set ambitious plans into motion.

  • Metal energy: Metals enjoy crafting the perfect blueprint for tomorrow. This question feels like solving a satisfying puzzle.

  • Earth energy: Earth might frame this question around how they can deepen relationships or bring more balance to their world.

  • Fire energy: Fires see this as an opportunity to reignite their spark for the next day, focusing on what will bring them the most joy and energy.

One Size Does Not Fit All

What I love about these questions is that they’re adaptable. When we understand our unique energy profile, we can tailor advice to resonate with our core self. This isn’t just about self-improvement; it’s about self-alignment.

Final Thoughts

Great advice isn’t one-size-fits-all. It works best when a mirror reflects who we are and where we’re headed. When we align advice with our natural energies, we unlock its full transformative power.

So, let me ask you: How can you grow, help, shine, and improve tomorrow in a way that feels uniquely you? 🌟
