Ep#114 | Bursting Through The Masculinity Box

Thorsteinn V. Einarsson is masculinity activist and a speaker which is finishing his master degree in Gender studies at the University of Iceland and runs the social media called Karlmennskan (e. Masculinitie) where he aims to put a feminist light on how masculine ideas affects men and the society in a bad way.

Thorsteinn calls himself former misogynist that became feminist, so to say, over one weekend in 2014. That event is connected to nail polish and peoples reaction that opens his window to a new sight of life and on himself. Thorsteinn started a social movement on Twitter under the hashtag karlmennskan in Iceland when around 400 men shared their personal stories on how masculine ideas had affected their lives.

Since 2018 Thorsteinn has met close to ten thousand people in Iceland to talk about his experience, masculine ideas and how we can and should change what it means to be a real man. Thorsteinn has also produced four webTV episodes on men and masculinities in collaboration with Stundin local news media.

Some great takeaways from Thorsteinn :

  • See the bigger vision is essential for changing your perception.

  • Be a human being, 100%

  • Men's boxes can be just as limiting as to the ‘Women’s box

  • Emotions are not gendered, both men and women have emotions - that’s human!

A platform designed to teach you how to create safe space for deep-dive conversations that open up for the conscious and unconscious bias behaviours, placing ourselves and others into boxes, that places our focus on what separates us as human beings, not what unites us.
